Well… treating non-US citizens like US citizens and conducting civilian trials for them is NOT the right way at all.
The only way to truly defeat terrorism, IMHO, is to treat them the way they treat us. But… if they’d be happy if we just left them alone, then do that. I just don’t think they would, since some of the terrorist groups have, IIRC, announced that they want the extermination of everyone in the “West”.
Extremism is nearly impossible to wipe out. The only way that I can see to do it, is to make the punishment far worse than anything else they could do. If it takes heads on pikes to defeat them, then we should be putting heads on pikes. Heck, if them beheading our people is any indication of what they think is right, then we should skip the negotiation table and respond in kind.
If, on the other hand, giving in to their demands (“requests”) is what it takes, then we probably should consider that. After all, that’s pretty much what the British had to do to finally defeat the IRA… and yes, the IRA was a terrorist organization that couldn’t be defeated by brute force.
